![]() ![]() It’s critical to ensure that the DSN configuration is absolutely perfect in order for the database connection to work as expected. Therefore, any troubleshooting of the connection to the database should begin there. The DSN configuration used for ODBC is stored on the local system from which the requests to the DBMS will be made. In these cases, the ODBC driver can then prompt for the appropriate data. Some of these are considered required by the ODBC driver for the specific DBMS type in use but are optional for the DSN. The DSN contains all of the information necessary to be able to communicate with the DMBS including the host name, database name, UID, password and other important details. The driver manager allows for the creation of Data Source Names (DSNs). The ODBC driver manager allows for configuration of the driver, which then handles the actual work of communicating with the DBMS. ODBC appears to the operating system and its applications as a driver. From a configuration perspective, this means that the ODBC communications layer on top of the OS must be configured to understand the call being sent to it and know where to forward that call in order to communicate with the actual DBMS. The intent is for applications to be able to make a call to an ODBC data source and be able to perform that call in the same way whether they’re running on a Windows Server or UNIX-like platform. ODBC is supported by many operating systems and is intended to be an OS agnostic interface for performing database-related communication. For the purposes of this section, let’s talk about what can go wrong with each. Each has its own nuances and requires some level of configuration to work correctly. Depending on the DBMS in use, some or all of these may be supported. Some of the more common are Open Database Connectivity (ODBC) configuration, local configuration files, proprietary name services, and LDAP. Different DBMSs use different mechanisms to identify the location of a database. When connecting to any given database, the first step is to find it.
